Day 1, Literatti

"Each child is born a poet and every poet is a child." -Piri Thomas

This morning after reading and discussing a few contemporary poems by Mary Oliver and William Stafford, the children began to create word tickets. Word tickets are comprised of any unique and evocative words they can think of. These words can come straight from their minds or be found in books. The children jumped in to ticket creation and came up with some brilliant, inspirational words. We then played what I call, “Literatti”. Literatti is basically a forum for free-writing. We pull a word ticket at random from the bag and the students have a minute to write as much as they can about that word. The children then share out what they wrote. The results are always exciting and varied and the kids get a huge kick out of listening and sharing. Literatti helps set up an environment of risk-taking and trust for the kids and is an excellent warm up for any writing session. Here are some samples from our first Literatti session:

Word: SOON

When I hear the word soon,

I wonder if it means I'll soon

be home playing gaily

in my dogs bed.
The word soon makes me
cry out like a loon.
